Because overloading a system to the point where it lags out and dies works for them. It's the tactic they've been using for at least a year now. Where have you been?

Yep, there is a reason. Lagging a system out makes winning and losing more of a crapshoot, and tends to favor the force that had the most people in a system at the time the node died. You can expect to see Goons do this every time the Russians look like they might be in trouble. Why does it make sense? Because, again, it works for them, and has been working for over a year now. The unhappy state of the game is that either side will do what it takes to win, whether that means playing the game, or playing the game mechanics and server limitations.

If it came down to a contest of pure pvp skill, tactics, and strategy, I don't think even the Goons could delude themselves into thinking they'd have much of a chance against MC and BoB. Fortunately for them, it doesn't.
